I am now looking into possible layout and cover ideas, below i have found some examples that I believe will help me with my idea generation when it comes to putting my book together on the computer. As I have already said previously I really want to try and be experimental with my colours and create a very unique layout, that can be linked to french styles and methods.
I have found many examples that uses duo-tone on the images, I may be able to experiment with this style and see if it works with the tone of voice and colour scheme, because it may look out of place and there for it would become a completely stylised choice which I don't want. All of these examples also have very "pretty ugly" type setting which I believe makes them more interesting for the reader but also, that links back to the French styles that I looked into, they are are mad about type and seem to be using it type in new and innovative ways. This style of imagery and layout will be appropriate to my target audience, it will also help less interesting content seem more alive because some of the destinations in the guide may not be that exciting but playful imagery will help.
TOO MUCH - Magazine
Although this is a magazine, it has very interesting feature that helps to set it aside from other magazines currently welling to a similar market. The photography is very beautiful and that helps to bring the story that it selling to life, but this is mixed with the "half pages" and the duo-tone images on the blue stock really helps to give the publication the extra style. Not only do the "half pages" help with the style of the book but they help split of the chapters of the story. This could be a method I could use to help split up the different destinations in the travel guide.
DRIFT - Magazine
From looking at DRIFT you can tell that has been a lot of time and pleasure taken over the typesetting, as well as the use of white space. You can partly put this down to the theme of the magazine, as Stockholm is a very design centred place but the use of white space and minimal page layout really helps to set the tone of voice and capture the audience with the vibrant content.
Justified - Magazine
The magazines main focus is on modern and clean looking photography, that already does most of the eye-catching but for as a designer you notice the smaller things for example the typeface used is very "in trend" but it suits the name of the publication very nicely. You can also see from the images that there is very little to read, as the full bleed images and leave little room, meaning there are some very carefully arranged page numbers and titles.
Symbols by Izaac Enciso - Photo Book
This is a good example of a coffee table book, but what can be taken from this is the simplicity of the page layout. They have made good use of contrasting images and even using double pages for full impact on certain images. The book is also hard back, making it easier to sit down and flick through, the cover is a very important part of the process and needs to be considered very carefully.
