Studio Brief 01 - Type In Context - Travel Guide Research

General travel guides -

ROUGH GUIDES

Rough Guides covers over 200 destinations making it a very general supplier of guides, which also makes there target audience a lot bigger as they cover almost anything that anyone could want. The tone of voice is now very formal as it has to appeal to the large target audience but when the guides were first introduced it was aimed at back-backers on a budget which meant that the tone of voice was not as formal. But like a lot of these generic guides the are crammed full of information making it almost impossible to find what you're looking for and that could even mean that you loose out on finding something that you might be looking for.

Eyewitness Travel Guides

Very much like the rough guides the Dorling Kindersley travel guides packed full of information on all sorts of activities and recommendations for traveler's but the books are intended for all audiences rather than just back-packers. The production of these style of guides are very well thought about, with a thick plastic page wrap to protect them from being used out in the field. They are normally of a good size so that you can chuck it into your bag making it easy to take it out and about. Another positive part to the Eyewitness guides is that they are very reasonably priced for how much information out can get from them on one particular place.

Design conscious Guides -

Lost In

These are guides that are based around the idea of getting lost in a city amongst art, design, and culture. One of the main attractions to this particular guides is typography-led design on the front cover which also continues through out the rest of the guide, each guide speaks the personality of each place through the type shown on the front cover, this helps make each guide more diverse. Inside each destination guide is revealing the cities best kept secrets that normally only the locals know about, this is why this guide trumps the more commercial guides. Because is you're someone like me (a designer) I am more interested in cool shops, cafes and bars rather than big tourist attractions. Just from the cover alone it helps to catch the target audience as they can already see what sort of guide they are picking up by enjoying the wildly varied typography and the amusing tag line. The lost in guide also includes an app which people can find similar information on cool things to do, which help makes the guide more interactive because people are more inclined to use their phone, as it can be a lot easier.

12hrs

This is not a physical guide book that one could by from a book store, it is a website that is 100% free for anyone to use although it is not a book which is one of the main reasons why I am researching into guides the content and the way it has been written is still very relevant to the target audience that I am aiming to appeal to. They are trying to appeal to their target audience by using very beautiful images and interestingly written passages of text about a certain place, I also like the idea that they only focus on the fact that people may not have very much time in a place so they give you an idea of what you can do, and it appeals really well to anyone who is bothered about art, design or eating!

Wallpaper*

Wallpaper travel guides are one of the more popular "insider" guides that has around 100 different destinations that people can discover. They are great as on the roll guides as the guides are very compact (pocket size) and not to thick. A great thing about the production of these guides is that they aren't hard back or super heavy stock, they have durable stock, with a very good matte finish, which I think is the perfect mix for a guide like this. The simplicity of the front cover design is great as they really appeal to the design related audience, one reason being is they become as great collectors items/souvenir from a trip.

Monocle

This is the be biggest city guide of its kind, with the aim again trying to make you feel like a local and not a tourist. The books are packed full of great information about culture but the tone of voice is still informal making it for everyone and not limiting the audience. This style of guide is much for looking at when you're not walking a city it for planning etc...this is why it has a hard cover and a rounded spine. The guides are also very beautifully illustrated so they can be kept as coffee table reads for when you're no longer on holiday.
