Studio Brief 01 - Type In Context - Finalising Concept

Forgotten/Hidden France -

When people think of France or even when you do a quick Google search the first things that is bought to your attention are the points of interest being the Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles and French Riviera and the main destinations that pop up are Paris, Nice and Bordeaux. These are all amazing places with loads going, but France is such a vast country with lots more offer specially when it comes to the smaller less populated areas. These area will be explored though a design conscious reference manual that will showing mainly creatives that there is a lot going on outside if the big cities, and it would be known as "A Guide to Hidden/Forgotten France".

What is the context of the publication? The book itself is going to be a reference manual to a small area in Southwest France that can otherwise be referred to as hidden France. Yes, it can be tourist attraction but it should be discovered by more people specially people are more design conscious as it could make them understand there is more out there than just Paris and Amsterdam.

Who is the target audience? The target audience already excites as there is a good market of people who are interested in a more unique travel guide a good example of these are the Wallpaper and Lost In travel guides these are very well designed and are more of a collectable book which could be a more interesting way to pitch the idea of a book, yes you could take it with you but most would just have it as a keep to have at home as reminder that they have been to that particular place. Most books of this type cost anywhere from £5-£15 so they are very affordable letting most people take advantage of the information that is being sold. As this is a rather larger market, the aim for this book is for it to be priced between £7-£10 making it affordable to almost anyone that would want to purchase the book as it if it too cheap the print quality is going make the book fall behind it competitors and if the book is too expensive it means less people will buy the book as well as there will also be a limited run, making it more difficult for everyone that wants it to get it.

How will you capture the target audience? To capture the target audience the book needs to sold in the correct places. In Leeds there are a number of places that it could be sold that would reach the right target audience. One would be be Village Bookstore, there they sell a a range of design related books and magazines, they also have a small selection of travel related books that are all hitting the same target audience that I am aiming for. This would be an ideal place to have the product placed as it would reach the right demographic. There are also many other book stores around the country, specially in London that carry a good selection of design/culture travel books for this market. These type of books are normally bought by people who enjoy design and will purchase the book because of design orientated appeal.

Commercial print considerations? When it comes to commercial printing one should consider the price point, as previously stated the book is going to be priced between £7-£10. This means that more copies will have to be produced to keep the cost down, but the cost depends on a few different things. One being paper stock, sourcing the correct paper stock that not only works for the type of book but works for the cost as well. Second, looking at how its going to be printed the best option would be offset printing this would get the best results but it is also the most expensive but the more that is printed will keep the cost down. An easier and much cheaper way would be to use Digital; it is much cheaper but the print quality wouldn't be as good although you can still achieve a good standard of print from this method. But type of book will benefit from being Offset printed to make sure that it is perfect and costumers are getting what they are paying for.

Actual print and considerations? When it comes to printing, the digital printer will be used to print the book double sided very easily the print quality is also of a very good standard. To make sure it is at high standard before handing it in  two print slots will need to be booked, two weeks before and then another a week later this is so that everything can be perfect before handing in. It will also give a chance to go over any worries or mistakes with the printing process.
