Inspiration/Style Research -
After thinking about the content I needed to start researching into how I planning on displaying the content whether this would be a poster a folded map or in a publication more like a guide book.
I knew about the travel guides by Monocle these are a lot more complex than what I my first ideas but the overall style and the way they present themselves to a certain target audience of younger and more out going people is good. I feel that the tone of voice for my map will be in a similar context as it will be aimed at young first year design students. The map style is very simple and and uses a few colours this makes it very simple and easy to read for most people.
I started thinking about other ways that I could present this information in an easy and cost effective way, I thought about the one of the study tasks I completed for OUGD404 which was about folds and how there are many interesting ways to fold paper. Thinking about this I decided to research maps that uses folding techniques as I believe this would be one of then best formats for a map as most maps do come folded.
Although I cannot see what size these maps are in person, I have started to consider what would be the most approaite paper size for a map. When looking at these images most seemed to be of a decent size of A4 plus I feel it would have to be bigger than A4 because if the type is too small people will struggle to read what it on the page. How will the map be folded is also the another consideration that I need to think about because I need to be able to design the content around the way it will be folded so that the each content fits in with the fold lines, if not it will be look unprofessional.
As this brief is aimed at next years firsts years I needed to make the style appropriate for them, its needs to visually pleasing as this would appeal to more people as I know as a first year design student you become very judgemental of design so it needs to be in a style that will grab the attention of these sort of people. So I looked for posters, publications and other relevant content that would help shape what my design will begin to look like, I understood that the content is very important as this is why they need the map in the first place but we all know that most people specially new design students want to read/use something that looks "pretty" and will still get the job done.
