As I know that I want to produce a map of some sort I am still unsure about how I should present this, maps come in many shapes and sizes as I discovered from my research. started to think about how I can present it, first in the form of a small publication and second as a folded map with a map on one side and the content on the other.
Publication Concept -
The pros of producing a publication, a publication can very easily order/set out meaning that it is easy to find certain places within the publication quickly as you can use a contents page. My idea for creating a publication is that I would create a guide to Leeds that specialises in good places for first year design students to go, as when I was at the start of the year my friends and were unsure of where we should go out and decent shop general things that you want to know who you come to a new place and as this is your new home you want to know that as soon as possible.
Poster -
I thought another way of communicating this sort of information would be through a series of posters that would have captions on them that relate to all of the places that I have been going too over the course of the year. I believed this would be a good ideas as it would be something that a student could put on up on their bare walls of their new room. I would create simple posters that would show why these places are good to go too, including opening times best time to go, what to do there. An example of this would be going to Mrs Atha's and using it as a working environment as it is different to most of coffee shops, if anything it encourages working as you can sit relax and get on with some blogging.
Fold-away Map Concept -
This idea came from personal experience at the beginning of the year it took some understanding of the complicated streets around Leeds and figuring out that best way to get some where, this is why I thought a map would be a great idea. The map would be easily foldable so that you can put it easily into something like your back pocket or you bag.
I then considered the sort of places that I went too the first couple weeks of term, I realised that I continue to visit these places and I soon realised so did a lot of other young creatives from around the city. Concept behind the map is that it is a quick guide for design students in Leeds so it will consist of all sorts of places that I looked at in research where creatives hangout this will hopefully be good for new students of the course as it may be useful for events that relate to the subject or eventually lead to networking with new people.
I decide to take forward the idea of the folding map, this is for two main reasons over the course of the year I have had the chance to create many posters and publications and leaflets. The one that I was least happy about was my leaflet design I believe that the map idea would give me another shot at creating something like this I am able to improve on my mistakes and be more ambitious about the design. Second is that I feel that a map is the most appropriate and practical way of showing someone round a city, although publication is good it can be difficult to find things, so a map would be perfect response to this brief.
The next part of my idea generation was to sketch out and idea for the lay out and and how the map would be folded. As you can see from scaled down mock up it is a simple fold that follows the same pattern of a concertina but then it has been folded in half top make it pocketable. The idea consist of three four main points the front over, back cover including the key, first page with has the map with the destination on and the back side which includes further details about each destination this includes a little information and opening times for the place.
The next stage was to take this idea from paper to the computer, first I had to design a map that would be the centre piece for the first page. I used a lot of inspiration from the images that I found online of other peoples maps this helped me decide on colour choice and an overall style. I started by screen shooting good maps of the idea that I needed to trace over, I then added main roads, smaller roads, large buildings (for reference) and other points of interest this is because I am not using road names, this is a stylistic choice as the page would become too clustered with them on.
This is my final result for the map a simple but useful map that had pin pointed destinations as intended. It was suggested to me that I colour code each number for the different section making it easier to see, rather than it being one. The next stage is for me to design the rest of the map, including the layout of the second page making sure that it works with the amount of folds that I will be having. As well as creating a key for the colours and a front cover.
Once I added the map into the InDesign document I was able to begin to think about where the content would be placed and whether everything would work together. I used the grid columns to help structure the design this was a good guide for understanding where the fold would so that I could avoid having something on a fold. I am using bleed as I want the map to run right to the edge to make full use of the paper.
This is the back page this will have the content on it that links with the coloured pins on the map. I had the idea that each line would represent each category to make it easier to read at a glance. As many maps can become difficult to read if things are in alphabetical order. These also help has fold marks so that it is easily to fold away again. The next part was to use what information I collected in my research stage to the page this would mean making sure everything fit in where it was meant to and finding the right type size to display the text as I did not want the text to be unreadable.
Below is the ready to print design, the front cover consists of a simple and stylish strike through, this is because the inside of the map is busy with colour so I didn't want to over complicate what was inside so I kept it simple with a muted blue. Creating the cover also gave me a chance to name the map/guide I considered names like Headrow via Village and being a designer in Leeds but I was trying to be too cleaver about the cover and it needed to be more simple so I went with the name Leeds - Guide for Design Students because thats what it is everything in the map is relevant for design student in Leeds specially first year students. Again with the key I made this very easy to read and not cover complicated as it ends to be very easy to read so that someone can grab the map quickly and say I need to find this place, this helps them do that effectively. On the back page I have the further information, so that if they are interested they can read some insider information about the place this also comes with the opening times and recommendations.
