Studio Brief 02 - What is a Book? - Production & Final Outcome

Production

The content for the publication makes up everything of the book so I needed to arrange with friends when I could take photos of them. I managed to get all of my shooting done this week and I was lucky enough for the weather to be okay when out and about shooting.

The outcome of this weeks shoot has been very positive I have near enough got every picture that I need for the publication, as it consist of 15 different outfits. There maybe some images that I am not happy with or that I need to re-shoot. Below is a section of the edited images from the weeks shoot, they are all in a similar style this is style that I want to portray in the publication.

Now that I have all the images I am able able to start adding them into the document that I have created, and I will be able too use the rough guide that I created to see where each image will be positions etc.

I have also now decided that text I will be using for the book, while looking through other magazines/publications of this nature I saw that some do not sure much text specially a lookbook, they just describe the outfit that is above. So I will be adding some smaller body text below the images these will be descriptions, as I did not plan this into my guide I will experimenting with the positioning of the text with help of the grid system.

As you can see from the screenshots above my publication is now almost ready for printing, I just need to go over every page and make sure that all the alinements are correct and that everything is where it should be, I used my rough guide to make sure that I was putting it together right. I have also made sure that all my images stay with in the top and bottom of the grid, as I want to create more white space to keep the style of the publication throughout. My decision to change the body type to pink of the front cover has worked well as it adds more colour to the plan white pages, I also tried the blue as body text but I felt that it did not work as well on some pages (black and white ones).

Now that I am ready for printing and the digital side of the publication has been completed, I needed to research into some stock. So I used the G.F Smith website to look at what stock I should use/be most appropriate.

I have been looking for a soft matt as I did not want a textured paper, I felt that a soft matt work work the best for the stile of publication I am creating. The best soft matt the I found was Heaven 42, so I ordered some at a couple of weights from 135 gsm - 300 gsm too see what weight would be best. I ended up going for the 200 gsm as I felt this was still strong enough and good weight for flicking through a book and it would also not be too thin.

Printing

When it came to printing, I as struck with a slight difficulty. The paper that I had chosen would not go through the laser printing and it kept jamming in the printer - the problem seemed to be that the printer did not like taking the A4 paper. This then resulted in me having to use the A3 soft matt that is in the Digital Print room at university. I had to do this because I was unable to get another appointment but the print still came of really nicely they images are crisp and how I wanted them too look - along with the colours too.

Bookbinding/Final Outcome

I thought that saddle stitching my publication not only look better it would make nice touch rather stables because produced a clean looking publication with nice images and it would almost make it look worse so that is why I am stitching it.

Using what I learnt from the workshop and the help from a few YouTube vidoes I was able to stitch the book together. I found the process very straight forward and hardest part was just keeping it tight. After stitching it together I was the able to cut the publication down to the A5 size that i have intended for, I had to made sure that the edges were very well cut in order for the it work well the best. The finial out come was very good, I managed to get a very clean cut on now that the book has been fully put together I am very happy with the finial outcome.
