I had two originally ideas one a more simple lookbook that would just showcase Spring Summer fashion with images of my friends and what the will be wearing. The second was a more complex idea of a lookbook, looking into more how streetwear has evolved for the last 10 or so years.
The more complex idea has got better potential as it would mean the publication would have more articles about what has happened and how things have changed along side some pictures that show this. But too get the pictures I needed to get access to locations like forests and mountains for example like the Yorkshire Moors. But to get to these locations it proved to be more difficult that I imagined as it would also involved taking several people with me to help shoot the pictures. So I have chosen to go with my first idea that will be a lot easier to get the content for.
My finial idea for the publication is too use street style photography and show off certain spring summer looks and the under laying theme of the publication is that all the model are my friends. So I came I came up with the name Friends & Fashion because thats what it is, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. Because when you look at of of publication of a similar nature they all have very odd names that may not relate too the content.
Design/Layout
Now that I have finalised the idea I am now able to start thinking about the design of the publication and the layout of each page. When doing the first publication I found it very useful to create a rough version that I could use understand sizing and what would go on each page.
When creating the rough version I thought it would be a good idea to pan out what sort of picture was to go on each page and think about the content, so that I made sure that I have enough time to shoot all of the people that I need too. So I planned how many outfits/people I need from this I then added what sort of photos they might be and how they would be placed.
Below is is my rough guide to how I am planning the layout for the publication, it will be A5, I have not yet decided on what stock to use, I will get to this later in the production. I have also made a rough plan on each page to see what the layout will look like, this will also help me when when I come to shoot as I will know what sort of images to take not just randomly taking ones that I might feel look right.
Moving to InDesign
the nest step was to actually set up a document of the appropriate size and grid system also, I have learnt from doing my first publication about grids how important the can be when it comes to layout design.
I created a grid system using my master page, it consisted of 7 columns and I then added 8 more guidelines that would also add to the grid, organising content length ways. The margin on the document has been set too 10mm this is so that I still have a good amount of space on the outside. Then incase I want too add bleed to the images or even text I have added 3mm of bleed to insure that I do not have any problems when it comes to printing at the end of the project.
This is the simon front over that I have come up with, I believe it does the job well as the colours hep to resemble summer feel too the book and the simple typography is also very clean and congrats with the large pink rectangle.
Now that I have all of my pages set up and I know what will be going on each page, I just need to add the folio numbers, which will be situated in the right and left of each page, instead of at the bottom as I originally planned as I felt they looked out of place at the bottom of the page.
I have chosen for the body text to be the same colour as the large rectangle of the front over as i looked like there was too much of one colour n the page as well as the folio numbers. As you can see below this is what my Contents page looks like and how I have used the grid to line it all up.
I have also added a couple of images that I have already taken too see what they will like like on the pages to try and understand whether it looks good enough or whether I will need to change it around to how I designed it in the rough drawn copy.
