Study Task 03 - How Do You Read?

Grids

After receiving a lecture on the use of grids about mostly The Independent newspaper but also how they can be used in other newspapers and publications. We were asked to get into pairs and get some newspaper articles and mark out the grid system to see whether how they are set together. Most publications and newspapers will have a set grid system that they use for each issue, so we marked them out to see how they would be on different pages, we had to think about how many rows and columns they are using and how the text and images flow on the page.  

The Independent issue that I looked at had a 5 column grid, that mostly ran though out most pages. You can see the use of the grid is very useful in the production of the newspaper, as without that it would make it very difficult for type setting, this makes it easier for the peoples putting it together on a daily basis. The grid helps to keep consistency throughout the newspaper, without a grid it could mean that it would be very miss match and difficult for readers and read because of the flow.  

This is another example of how grid systems can be used in industry, this is Transworld Surf magazine it undertook a re-design and the design studio that did this created a very complicated but interesting grid system that would make the whole layout and readability better. You can see how the grid is over layed and different elements can be put in different places on each issue. For my publications coming up I will create some sort of grid system that flows through out so that it has the same style the whole way through.
