Study Task 04 - Typesetting

Study Task 04 - Typesetting

The brief was to look at affect typesetting and layout has on the aesthetic, communication, legibility and readability of information. I then choose a takeaway menu and I had to began to re-typeset the content to demonstrate my understanding of readability, legibility, information and editorial design in everyday life.

Below is the takeaway menu that I found that I was re-setting, alt ought the menu does work there are parts that could be changed so that the it is typeset correctly. If you see the part which as been highlighted by the black box you can see how it doesn't have very good typography. So to change this I decided that I would rework / rework each part. I also felt that the way the prices were set made it difficult to read as it doesn't seem that legible for someone who may not be able too see that well, the price needs to be in a place where it can be seen. The readability of the current type is okay, but some parts could be altered so that there isn't so much block text, as when you are ordering a pizza the last thing you can to do is read lots of text, so simple to the point text may work better.

To the left is my re-design of the typesetting, I have changed the colours as I feel that it makes the text standout to the reader. It becomes more readable when on a coloured background. To start I changed the fact that the pizza size wasn't easy too see, now you can clearly read what size and how much. I believe that this works better as it is a lot simpler for the readers.

I then moved on too the body text, I wanted to make sure that in the body text that there was no orphans or widows as they are considered bad typography. So I had to remove them as they were in the previous design.

I did not believe that the type would look correct if it had been justified so I floated the type to the left as I did feel that it was best suited like that, but I wanted it still to be easy to read.

With the sub-heading text it is the same point size the body but I have capitalised it so that it does stand out and you can clearly read it when just scanning through the menu.
