For the content for my book, I found some very useful books that can give me the knowledge for the content. Mueller Brockmann Josef Grid Systems in Graphic Design, this book has given me all the useful information that I need to be able to talk about grades systems properly. As well as this I looked at The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli which also talking about the underlaying rules of graphic design, he has a great section on grid systems. I have also been researching online and looking for websites that I might be able to take content from, as it would be good to get a more modern take on grid systems as the book is over a decade old and although the canons haven't really changed it would be good to show who they have developed over the years.
Have reading through the book and finding relevant areas that I will include in my publication these are the areas that I will be talking about in the book -
What is a grid?
A grid is a structure (usually two-dimensional) made up of a series of intersecting straight (vertical, horizontal, and angular) or curved guide lines used to structure content. The grid serves as
an armature or framework on which a designer can organize graphic elements (images, glyphs, paragraphs, etc.) in a rational, easy-to-absorb manner. A grid can be used to organize graphic elements in relation to a page, in relation to other graphic elements on the page, or relation to other parts of the same graphic element or shape.
The typographic grid
If the text and pictures are arranged systematically. the priorities stand out more clearly. A suitable grid fn visual design makes it easier.
A.To construct the argument objectively with the means of visual communication.
B. 10 construct tho text and illustrative material systematically and logically.
C. To organize lhe text ;md illustrations in a compact arrangement with its own rhythm
D. To put log ether the visual material so that it is readable.
There are various reasons for using the grid as an aid in the organisation of text and illustration: economic reasons: a problem can be solved in less time and at lower cost
rational reasons: both simple and complex problems can be solved in a uniform and characteristic style. mental attitude: the systematic presentation of facts, of sequences of events, and of solutions to problems should, for social and educational reasons. be a constructive contribution to the cultural state of society and an expression or our sense of responsibility.
Purpose of grid system
The grid is used by tho typographer, graphic designer, photographer and exhibition designer for solving visual problems in two and three dimensions. The graphic designer and typographer use it for designing press advertisements. brochures, catalogues, books, periodicals etc, and the designer for conceiving his plan for exhibitions and
how-window displays.
The Golden Ratio
Closely related to the Fibonacci Sequence the Golden Ratio describes the perfectly symmetrical relationship between two proportions. Approximately equal to a 1:1.61 ratio, the Golden Ratio can be illustrated using a Golden Rectangle: a large rectangle consisting of a square and a smaller rectangle. If you remove this square from the rectangle, you’ll be left with another, smaller Golden Rectangle. This could continue infinitely, like Fibonacci numbers – which work in reverse. (Adding a square equal to the length of the longest side of the rectangle gets you increasingly closer to a Golden Ratio.
Creating a Grid
It’s always easier in these kinds of tutorials to put the example in context, in some kind of real world scenario. So, this is it. You’ve got to design a programme for a gallery exhibition. You know you want the size to be A4. You also know that there are going to be photographs and text, and the photographs will be of varying size.
Research
For some of my research I also looked online for examples of publications that show grid systems for example the way in white the type has been set and how the image interact with the page. After looking through examples of work I deiced that I want to keep my publication very minimal and clean as grids systems were created in a modernist time so that means that clean and ordered design works best for this publication.
As well as looking at examples of work that would inspire me I also got hold of a few different magazine, to have a look and see how the content has been set up and the systems they may be using. As I did not want to limit myself just by looking on
there internet.
