Letterhead and stationary, in general, are a very important part of the identity of any graphic design business, as this is where your clients will be interacting with you (formerly) so it is key that we get this right as WYS needs to be a professionally run business (we are not going to be students for much longer).
To design the letterhead I already knew that it would be in A4 format ad this is the standard letter size and we will only be sending letters at this size. Like the business cards, it needs to have all the basic contact information as well as including a little more like the registered business address.
Once I knew exactly what was going to be on the letterhead I was then able to play around with the placement of the text and see what worked and what didn't. When designing something like this I needed to keep in mind that its all about ease of use and needs to be easy for the reader (clients) to read, this is why I used a three column grid to work around as I felt it would help make the information flow nicely. Having these elements down, I was then just able to play around with the type until I found something I was happy with I felt that it also needed to keep the link with the business cards, this is why I have continued to you UPPER case letters forms.
FINAL LETTERHEAD DESIGN
With the final design, you can see that I have kept to the overall style of the WYS brand, it is very structured and is easy to read the eye can easily read the parts in sections and it is not confusing to read. In a feedback session, this was the design that got the best feedback as peers like the use of white space and thought that this would be good for overlaying other parts of the identity on to, which you can see below.
I also went with this design as it meant that the invoice and the letterhead shared the same header which helps to keep the consistency which is a key part of the brand. This allows us to then have many of these pre-printed for when we need them whether it will be for letters or for invoices.
PRODUCTION / STOCK
The stock choice is also very important for letterheads. Although this is something that will get used a lot (hopefully) we don't want this to be printed on highly expensive stock. So we decided that the best stock to use would be GF SMITH Colorplan - Bright White. This paper is affordable, and yet you still get a good quality finish as the paper has a good texture. The client can also see that we go the extra mile to ensure things are done properly, again linking back to the consistency throughout the brand.
