Studio Brief 01 - Leeds Public Spaces - Production

The production of my poster is very simple. I have a one layer print the rest of the colour (the second layer) is the paper and I am going to be experimenting with different stock and ink to get the best look for my punk poster. The other reason to only having one layer is that punk posters were meant to be very quick and easy to print so I have incorporated that idea into my design. The main reason for choosing screen printing over any other traditional method is because of the texture that the print leaves, I felt that this lends itself nicely to the punk style and any mistakes or misprints will not matter because it fits the style.

Paper was important for this print as it was is giving the design the extra layer, a lot of punk and rave posters (both cheaply and quickly made) use neon stock as a means of adding colour. Although I wanted to achieve this stylised look I also wanted quality so I bought GF Smith colour plan stock at 135gsm with is the perfect weight so the ink does not effect the paper and it also has a very good colour to it. The texture of the paper also adds to the stylised look of the print.

The prints were very simple and easy to print, they did not cause me any trouble as it did not need to register the print in anyway so it was very straight forward. This allowed me to concentrate on the quality of the print which I think came out very nicely as I got the texture that I was looking for using screen printing. The fact that I was only producing one colour meant to that I could also take advantage of the extra time that I had to experiment with many colours mainly neon.

Overall the screen print process went as planned and I was pleased with the results as that I achieved using the different paper and coloured inks. It believe it helped to make the design more contemporary and make it relate to the a more modern punk style.
However the day after I printed all of my designs I noticed that there was a MASSIVE typo, the "60 years of punk" should be "40 years of punk" this is a very annoying typo as this now means that I have to redo the print. This has taught me a very valuable lesson which is that I should double or triple check my work every time as it is so important that  mistakes like these are not made on a bigger scale.
