Studio Brief 02 - Responsive - Monotype - Research Conclusion

After going away and researching the chosen areas that we had decided to research we met as a group to present the findings, we did this as we thought it would be the best way to understand what we had found rather than just reading from each others blogs. 

Tom went on to research the design culture within Paris and also how the youth culture of Paris could be celebrated better understood. He did this so we could look at the current styles and trends that are popular within the industry there as they are going to be different to what is popular in the UK. He then summarised his research for the rest of the group in a meeting so that we could then understand what more about this side of Paris. What I found out was that a lot pf what we all looked into linked very nicely together which would be expected but it helped a lot when reading through his research. 

Tom's findings - 

  • Noto Sans / open-source typeface family created by Monotype that covers every written language in the world, it covers over 800 languages and aims to preserve little-spoken or dead languages to help enable global communication “across borders, languages, cultures and time periods. This is relevant to the brief not only because its linked to Monotype but the typeface serves many particular languages and communities.
  • Fontsmith x Itnicethat / The series shows how typography is created but also how it can be adapted to add personality from particular backgrounds. Similar to the Monotype brief the typography aims to broader the possibility of type and to represent a culture, community or country but instead depicts the city of the designer and the unique visuals of that certain place. Looking into the Fontsmtih x Itsnicethat collaboration was an excellent source of research as it almost mirrors the Monotype brief, seeing how the designers altered Fontsmith fonts assured concerns about the Monotype brief. The designers almost make it look easy to alter a typeface to help evoke a culture, I can offer this research to my group and I'm assured this will later influence my groups work.
  • Paris as told by graphic designers article, this give us a better understanding of what the design scene in Paris is like and how people are being inspired. This will help a lot as we can start to pull inspiration from similar areas. 
  • How Atelier Müesli is helping Paris become a destination design city again article
  • Typography in Paris, this has links to the Paris metro much like New York uses Helvetica and Amsterdam uses Aviner. This is the sort of research that will help us inform our final designs and hopefully give out project some more context. 
  • Typographic responses of a similar nature to out brief, Tom researched further into projects that had been done about other cultures. We all found this very useful as it shows how you can communicate a culture through type. 



Joe's findings -

As Joe is an illustrator he took it upon himself to look at a number of french illustrators that we could use as inspiration, this was very helpful as Tom and I don't know much about illustration so we were able to learn about the french style and how that might be able to influence our work. He also looked into the current underground music scene within Paris as we thought this would be a very important part of the youth culture but it seems that a lot of the nightlife is dead but in recent years it has made a come back with new cool clubs popping up in different areas of the city. He also looked at the social goings on within Paris and he touched on certain social issues that are currently a problems within the city, these are the sort of things that we need to consider when communicating this culture as we don't want to offend anyone. 



Overall this stage was a massive success for our group, we were able to learn a lot about how we all work as a team and the information that we collected was very useful and we will be able inform the rest of our project using this research. From this point onwards we will be working on the concept and the tone of voice so that we can start thinking more about the aesthetics of of the project.
