The second part of this module is to work in groups to produce a response to one of the live brief set by D&AD. As part of the process I had to identify myself as a designer and state what brief(s) I would like to work on. Being a fan of exploring cultures and typography I was drawn towards the Monotype brief which is all about looking at how a misunderstood culture can be identified through a typographic response.
I was lucky enough to find two collaborators, Tom Dixon another graphic designer that also shares the similar interests within and out of design, and Joe Baker an illustrator that has a very unique style but is also very like minded. This made it very easy to get along as a group and make the final decision that we should work together on the Monotype brief.
The Brief
"Monotype challenges you to embody and express the importance of cultural diversity through a typography-led solution or campaign"
To get the ball rolling we went through the brief to highlight keywords and any other important parts that would help us with the brief. The D&AD briefs tend to be very free so it helps to get a good understanding of what they are looking for you to produce.
- A culture, community or country that is misunderstood
- Type-led campaign
- Physical and digital responses
- Celebrate diversity
- Think about - geography, industry, media, politics, and society
- How type can make an audience feel
- Typography/communication needs to be at the heart of it all
After reading through the brief it started to make a lot more sense and by pulling apart the brief we were able to start thinking of cultures that would start to fit the brief but more importantly a culture that we are interested in and think that people should take more time over.
