Studio Brief 01 - How Do You Read? - Development

Idea Development

First of all I felt that it would be best too create a hand rendered version of the publication that I could figure out how I was going to create it and where certain objects were going to be placed etc.

I found doing this ver helpful s it meant that it was more clear to myself how to create the publication before going too the computer it meant that I could mess around with what grids I wanted on each page.

On each page I made the decision to have a different grid system on each page, that was visible too the reader so that they would get a better understanding on a grid in action, rather than just reading bout it and just looking at the images that will be used. In the the Grid Systems book, I found a series of grids that have been created by Muller Broackmann, so I decided that it would be most recant to base each double spread of the grid, getting more complex after every page.

As you can see I have chosen the size (A5), this is an appropriate size for this style of publication for two reasons, the first I believed that as it was going to be more of a handbook style book it would need to smaller so it could easily fit in a bag. the second that the amount of pages is not massive so having a smaller paper size will make the book feel more substantial.

Putting it together

From here I took to the computer, and setup and InDesign document that would be the start of the book. The document that I setup was basic, I added 6 columns that would help me organise the grids to go on top, the columns were my basic grid system for the book. The gutter size was set at 3mm as I had to fit a lot of information in the space so I didn't want it to be too spaced out across the page. Again for the same reason I made the margin 10mm so all of the content would stay inside the margin line. I did not need to add bleed to slug at this point as I am not planning over images or text needing bleed.

I then added the cover of my book, this wad a very fine grid system that was shown in the Grid Systems book. I also felt that this grid sets the tone that the book will follow as I will then be able to set my heading and subheading type on that to begin to show how different grids can be used.

For the following pages I then created grids that were based around the ones that I fond from the Grid Systems book, as previously stated the pages would have different grids on each spread to so how type can be set and how see what it would look like if you were putting it together on the commuter. So below are the bases of the pages that will soon have images and type on them, I will use the grids as best I can to order content, although each page will be slightly different it will be key for showing people how to understand
grid systems. The next step will be too add the content and get ready for printing.
