Studio Brief 01 - Secret 7" - Research

Photography Styles

One area that I want too explore with this brief is using photography and see how that can be used to get too an outcome for the record sleeve. The first style of photography that I wanted too look at was minimal/still life photography, as I feel that this could be a possible way of representing the chosen song (The less I know the better - Tame Impala).

This particular style of photography lends itself the overall feel of the song, as the idea behind the song is that they have given upend don't care for someone an more, so "the less they know the better" so this could suggest all sorts of outcomes. In this case, the concept behind something like I have shown is the less that I know about is going on the better because it is so odd and overall strange, for example why would a piece if fruit be put in paint, there is no real reason.

The cleanness of the colours and the contrast of the fruit is links in well with the feel of the artists overall style, although this is not key it that particular style lends it self to the feel of the song and how it could be portrayed just though the sound of the song.

This style would also be continued into another of the songs such as, Crvrches - Clearest Blue as I could simple and clean photography that would help show what the song is just through colour. Below are some examples of what of how I could create a album cover for this song.

I also looked at exciting album covers, these are using minimal photography although you can't see how it relates to the music immediately but once you listen too the music you can see how it relates from the style of music. So I will use this idea when putting together ideas for my designs, I will create similar style photography that links too the song in a way that I think is appropriate.

Tame Impala - The Less I know The Better

Looking into, the bands current style and the way in which they want people too see them was where I started too look first. I looked at how all the album artwork is very similar in the way that it has been made, for example there are many psychedelic patterns, well they over style resembles psychedelic rock music. A lot of the work looks like it would be produced which listening too the music, as the patterns and colours are very out there and over the top which fits wit the music very well.

As I am not reproducing a single cover for the band and I producing a cover for an art show this means I can become more experimental with what I am creating. These album covers that I have looked at help me understand what has already been done, and this can help me develop ideas that I believe are more of my style, and tell the story of the song in the way that I want too.

I also looked at a few of the videos, although I was advised not too as this would mean
my main visual research would be through the video and I would end up creating a lot of things that look too similar too the current style. I watched through a couple of the videos, and enjoyed the way that the visuals interlock with the theme of the song and oh they can still get the story across even with outrageous visual art. These are elements that I want to incorporate into my designs for secret 7 designs.
