Figure and Ground
The eye differentiates an object from its surrounding area. A form, silhouette,
or shape is naturally perceived as figure (object), while the surrounding area is
perceived as ground (background). Balancing figure and ground can make the perceived image more clear.
Using unusual figure/ground relationships can add interest and sublety to
an image. The part of a composition that we pay attention to is called figure.
The figure is also called a positive shape. In a simple composition there
may be only one figure. In a complex composition there will be several
things to notice. As we look from one to another they each become
figure in turn.
White Space
White space refers to the canvas/page space left in between different
elements of your design. You may have also heard it referred to as negative
space. It is important because it keeps your design from being too cluttered
or too confusing.white space really helps with is the defining of
where the viewer’s emphasis should be.
Active White Space
This is the space that you make a conscious effort to add to your design for emphasis and structure. Active white space is often asymmetrical, which makes the design look more dynamic and active.

Passive White Space
This is the white space that occurs naturally, such as the area between words on a line or the space surrounding a logo or graphic element.
Looking at this double page spread you can see of the figure (positive space) has been taken up with and image, this image has become the main focus on the pages as this is what most would look at first. This does not make the text less important to the page though as the interesting/good typesetting makes it easy to read and more engaging for the reader.
Cereal Magazine
As you can see the images and text don't take up the whole page, they are centred and this helps the page come to life. The rest of the space (passive) helps the page feel more natural, as if there was more text it may begin too look cluttered and that makes it more difficult to read.
This second spread, is a great example of white space and how it can be impactful in a editorial of this style. What makes it more impactful is that the images are the main focus which is what they want you too look at and not be directed by type or other graphics. This spread also shows active white space, which means that the space that surrounds the images has been created to in chance the feel of the page as stated above.
COS Magazine
This publication used the images as the background in this case it could be see as the ground, as the text has been placed over the top explaining too the reader what the images are of etc, but this is also another way that can be very impactful as the image is really the only think too look at.
