Study Task 02 - YSP Symbol - OUDG403

Yorkshire Sculpture Park Symbol //

The Task

We had too, design and develop a range of symbols to act as a secondary or complimentary brand-mark for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Key parts of the task was too the use of negative space, silhouettes, angles and shape. Explore the use of abstract and representational forms.

A symbol should work effectively on a range of scales and should create an iconic visual signifier for a brand.

YSP - Inspiration Trip

While on the trip I took many photos of the park so that I could relate back to them when I began designing. These are just a hand full of pictures that I took to aid my idea development, taking these photos helped me to think about the park more when designing. For example colours and why I used curtain colours and just the overall feel of the syblom design.

Ideas & Sketches

Here I have some sketches that I did just for the first lot of ideas, I liked the idea of the YSP symbol already so I didn't want too change it's simplicity too much.

I was unsure whether I was meant too use type or not, I felt that it would have been better if I could have used type. But i continued not using type and concentrated on using the idea of a famous sculpture to represent the park. I ended up using the Henry Moore oval point to point. Purely because it was very easy to make a silhouette of and it would still be recognisable to people. But as well as this I looked at other sculptures but using the same idea.

Final Ideas

Here I have my final ideas that I have made for the YSP brief. As you can see, I wanted to keep them all in a similar style.

The reasoning behind the geometric shapes used was for it to connect with the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, I feel that it can partly represent even though it may not be obvious.

For the silhouette I wanted it too be something that stood out and was easy recognisable too people. I feel that this three that I chose can stand out because the are bold enough to work on any platform from large too very small.

The theory behind the colour was too, use the pictures that I took and then colour-pick them so that it still had a connection and wasn't just random colours.
