OUGD505 - End of Module Evaluation

To conclude on the Leeds public spaces brief, I have been able to produce an outcome that I am proud of and I am pleased that I chosen the event that I found. I thought the research side of this brief allowed me to think a lot about how I wanted to approach the brief, I am pleased that I looked into the Sex Pistols first ever gig in Leeds. Looking into the punk era has taught me a lot about how that era has effected many people and that it has helped to shape what we know as graphic design today. The research for this brief helped me to learn about how punk style should and shouldn’t be used and how it can be done.

My main focus of this project was to look at how I can use typography and how I can communicate my idea across by mainly using typography. I feel that I have achieved this goal as I had to experiment with many different styles of typefaces and use them in very unconventional ways, but I found it interesting to see how the type doesn’t need to follow rules. This is were my research really helped my ideas stage as I was able to look at all the different styles that revolve around punk.

I found this brief a very informative process as I was able to do things like create my own textures which helped to give a more of unique feel it also was very representative of how things would have been done in the punk era. However I am annoyed that I made a misprint as I would have liked not to print it again as I was very pleased with how the screen printing yet and I feel that it was my best attempt at screen printing even though it was only one layer. I could have possibly improved my prints by making the design more complicated included half-tone imagery etc. but I did not want to over complicate the nature of the design as it was clear what I was celebrating from the design.

Overall I think this brief was a massive learning curve for me, learning about how to design in a certain style was frustrating as it did have it limitations especially when it came to the image making part, I did find it difficult to experiment with imagery over typography but I hope that I have managed to over come this by producing a strong typographic response that clearly links to the event that it is celebrating without  trying to over complicate it. The research that I did for this brief was must more in depth that I normally would go, I found this had a positive impact on my practice and I have also seen how this has mirrored into studio brief 02.  I have been able to pushed myself to produce work that I would not normally do and it was successful.

Studio brief 02 has been a good learning curve for me, it has taught me a lot about how I should approach briefs from this point onwards. Looking back on other projects that I have done this year and comparing it this project I can see what I have done better and what I could improve.

Listening to feedback has been one of the things that I did differently this time round, normally I would not use my feedback in the same way that I have on this brief, this is because I feel that I may not be able to achieve the outcome that want, for example in the ideas stage I didn’t choose the idea that I wanted to take forward I evaluated each idea properly and took my time to think which would be the best outcome and which would have the best target audience reception. Doing this meant that chose the most appropriate outcome possible if I had not done this I don’t think I would have had the same positive feedback that I received. I have also learnt how effective different styles of design can be to solve a problem, in this case I mainly worked with type and it is good to see how type can have such a big impact on the target audience as it removes all of the extra bits that you don’t need and gets straight to the point. This has encouraged me to want to work with type even more going forward in my practice, Level 06 will be a perfect time to start specialising in this sort of area as I will be able to start defining my practice.

This brief was not my best on the time management side, having a number of other briefs to work on at the same time meant that I did neglect this brief till the end leaving me with limited time to produce the project. However I feel that I managed to keep on top of my work load and it was beneficial to work on a brief where I don’t have much time as it made me consider how much time I spend on different parts of the brief, if I had spent longer on research this could have effected the final outcome.

Did I solve the issue? I don’t think I have solved the issue as this would take a lot more to do but I after receiving positive feedback about the overall project I can see that I have made an impact and I have started to make people more aware of the issue in this country which is what I wanted to do and I highlighted this in my initial research presentation.

There is always many things that I could have done differently but the main point I am taking away from this project is structure. Without a good plan and time management it would almost be impossible to produce a good quality outcome. Overall I am pleased with the final outcome, I could have spent more time developing certain areas of the brief but I was thinking a lot about time and whether I would be able to get it done in time for the deadline. I am hoping that my standard of work will improve as I move into Level 06 but it is briefs like these that help you to learn the best as they push you out of your comfort zone.
