Studio Brief 01 - Type In Context - Final Feedback & Evaluation

This brief allowed me to experiment with lots of ideas and think more about the concept a lot more than in previous projects. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a while and I am pleased that I was able to create a book from the content that I collected over the summer. This was something that I was a but apprehensive about at first as I was unsure about how I could create a book from the odd mix of photos that I had, but it has showed me that if you think about the concept enough there is always an idea that will inform your findings.

There are a number of aims that I wanted to achieve within this brief areas that I could see needed improvement when moving up from level four. First, time management I wanted to see if I could find any ways to make it easier for me not to loose track of time and make sure that I completed the brief on time and to a good standard. I used a online tool called Trello which helped me easy make groups of lists with dates on them letting me know when different parts of the brief should be completed by. Having this on my phone and laptop was very useful for staying on track in till the very end as I do tend to loose focus towards the end of the project. It was proven to me that my time management skills payed off when I reached the production stage as I would not have been able to produce to a high standard.

I can see how I have learnt from level four in most stages of the brief but the one in particular was the research stage. It helped me understand what sort of book I should be creating for my target audience, when considering the target audience it made some design decisions easier than others, but this is something that I may not have considered in level four. An area that I should have improved on is how much I experimented with production methods, yes I produced a book with new production methods but I don’t feel like I pushed myself to create some really outstanding work and this could have changed if I had more carefully considered each part of the design process.

The production of the book was very informative but enjoyable, I was able to use what I had learnt in my research about book design and apply that knowledge in my own way. The most unfamiliar part of the process was the printing process, I wanted to make more of an effort to understand the printing, for example colour profiles and what needs to be done to get a project ready for print. It is still a very confusing process to me but I feel that this brief has given me the chance to get a better understanding of printing in both commercial and non-commercial.

Overall I am very happy with the project and the feedback that I have received from both tutors and peers is very useful. The areas that I need to improve on have been noted and I will be able to use what I have learnt on this brief in the future when designing more books. I feel that I have achieved what I set out to do with this brief and I have enjoyed being able to link all of the design process together and it has helped me to understand the production side of book design a lot better and I have enjoyed working more conceptually rather than design based and I will continue this through out my practice.

Final feedback -

- More experimentation for the cover

- Consider the target audience carefully - who am I really trying to get to read the book be     open about it

- Half-covers - help to break the book up more engaging more important than the actually     images in some way

- Like minded creatives that want to travel

- Could be sold anywhere

- Front cover - flicker black line, commercial printing (white ink)
Add title, to make it more eye catching from the front

- Line length too long on the body text first page, if it was smaller it would help to reader       better and also fit with the rest of the white space book.

- The white space and the placement of the images is well done

- Page 21, the image is over the title of the page and the image on 22 isn’t so it looks off       and it would be better if it was the same

- Barcode, why is it there I don’t really need to have the barcode on this prototype.

- Type used is appropriate
