Photography
As my main content for this brief is the photographs, these will create most of the content for the book so I have been looking into different styles of photography that I can use to help influence my own work.
To start I looked at serval brand that have released lookbooks too see what the photography used if like and how that may create a style for my publication.
This lookbook from The North Face - Purple Label has got a great style and I believe that the way it has been shot can really show off the clothing in the images (thats what it is mean to do) but the clean style of photography and the contrast of wider shots next too close ups works really well. If i was to use this style it would help the reader see what the outfit consists of, also this sort of style works great for double pages, with lots of white space for style.
This is taken from the Supreme Spring/Summer 2016 lookbook all of the photos are very clean with no background (just white). Photography like this has been done to make sure a;l the attention is focused on the clothes, I like the style of this portrait photography and I feel that this could inspire the way in which I style the models.
The Palace Skateboards Summer 2016 lookbook photos are slightly more diverse, the pictures aren't as clean as the other two they look like they have been taken of a 35mm film camera, which gives grain and a certain look to the photo. I like this style but I don't feel that it would work as well in the style that I would like to achieve in my publication.
Layout/Style
Was well as photography, I needed to research into the layout and the style of the layout this would mean I was looking at things like typesetting, image placement, colour schemes and publication size. I learnt from Studio brief 01 that A5 was a great paper size for a small publication, so I have been draw towards doing it again at this size, so I need to make sure that I can get all of the content in the style I want to achieve in this smaller size.
In a lot of publications of this style from lifestyle magazines and fashion lookbooks they use white space too the advantage for added style as it can give all the information to the central object most likely to be an image (less is more). Bleed images are another way that creates style in this particular look of publication as a you will not have a margin, it helps to break it up and it gives it a slightly different look to the page. The way that the photos are set in publications above you can see the they follow a certain pattern of constancy, this is most likely helped by a good grid system.
Large imagery looks to be a very big part of publications of this sort, I can see why this has been done as you will not want to have 3 or more images too a page as it will become crowed and then this will take away the style that I am trying to achieve.
GRIND, an adult fashion & lifestyle magazine to be sent to the street graduation generation. Proposed a new sense of style of pointed adults do not forget the sense of fun. With beautiful photography GRIND is a magazine from Japan that showcases mens fashion season to season with very clean and simple front covers. However as you can see by most of the research I have conducted lifestyle/fashion magazine all have large images on the front and they all can be very similar in certain ways I might try and get away from this and just have a very clean simple graphic with type instead to make it different.
Content
Although most of us may just flick through magazines just look at the pictures (everyone does it) text and the stories that follow are what creates the tone of voice for the magazine and to the reader also. After the research that I have done you can see that a lot of the publications I have looked at specially the more fashion based ones use very little writing and they let the photos do the talking.
As I will be creating a lookbook of some sort, I have to make sure that the writing is relevant to the photos rather than it being a story about the clothes or the person. A lo of people these days love to see where certain clothes are from when reading this magazines so I intend for most of my writing to be written by myself and it will consist of mainly what the outfit consist of when to wear it.
For the photos that will be going into the publication, I will be taking serval trips with friends to go and take the photos for the publication. As it is a requirement to have 10 double pages I will need to have a minimum of 10 outfits, but I do not want to have every double page with one person so I may have 2 outfits on a page to break it up slightly.
These below are some test shots for the publication, ones that I may use but I have been practicing style that I want for the photos too see if I can achieve it. And I am very happy with the outcome, this is the sort of style that I will be using in my publication.
