OUGD404 - Study Task 09 - Bookbinding

Bookbinding, the book introduction to binding books was very useful. We were taught how to create three different styles of putting together a book each method slightly harder than the other.

The first method was to simply bind the book with the a stitch on the spine, the method uses three holes on the back and you just thread the string though the middle hole and then work outwards always making sure that the stitch is being kept tight. Because it is so easy to do you can pretty much do it with any sort of paper, you just have to make sure that you always keep it tight. When it is finished it looked very clean an simple, you can also add more holes and more it more complex if you have a bigger/taller book.

The second was stab-stitch, slightly more complicated but it does look a lot "cooler". For this you follow a pattern of the way that you stitch using 5 holes that have been made with a drill and you need to made sure you get through paper. This method is good for when you have many pages as it is strong and will last a long time. Different patterns can be made too when stitching so that you can make it look as unique as you like.

The third method (not pictures) was a zig-zag folded book with a hard cover at both ends, we did this method too see how to make a hard cover and also how you would stick together different types of material. Personally I enjoyed this method (the process) but I would not choose to use this for a publication.
